Biography
Originating in Berkeley, California, USA during 1967 under the moniker Gourmet’s Delight, the five-piece ensemble initially featured Terry Garthwaite (b. 11 July 1938, Berkeley, California, USA; guitar/vocals), her brother David Garthwaite on bass, Toni Brown (b. 16 November 1938, Madison, Wisconsin, USA; keyboards/guitar/vocals), Ron Wilson (b. 5 February 1933, San Diego, California, USA; percussion) and Fritz Kasten (b. Des Moines, Iowa, USA; drums). Jeff Neighbor (b. 19 March 1942, Grand Coulee, Washington, USA) stepped in for David Garthwaite before any recordings took place. Late in 1970 the self-titled debut appeared and produced the minor hit single “Brownsville.” Drawing from folk, blues and jazz sources, the relaxed approach conveyed an appealing freshness, yet later efforts never recaptured the same spark. Brown and Garthwaite shaped the overall vision, positioning Joy Of Cooking as a focal point for the Bay Area’s women’s movement. When the ensemble disbanded in 1973, Toni and Terry first collaborated on Cross Country, then pursued separate solo paths; strong reviews notwithstanding, neither achieved major commercial traction. In 1977 the pair issued the widely acclaimed album The Joy, but afterward returned to individual projects once the project failed to attract enough public attention.
