Biography
Julian Dawson, whose sound merges British pop with American roots rock, first rose to attention across Europe via a mid-'80s single issued by Rough Trade Records. Two albums on Polydor Records followed, and he also cut a pair of releases with Ian Matthews' group Plainsong. His initial U.S. outing, the 1990 Watermelon Records set Live on the Radio, preceded Fragile as China, which he tracked the next year for BMG/Ariola. The lead track "How Can I Sleep Without You" entered the charts, and 1994 brought the greatest-hits collection How Human Hearts Behave, newly featuring Lucinda Williams on a re-recorded version of that same song. Watermelon Records returned the following year with Travel On, whose guests included Nicky Hopkins, Jules Shear, and Willie Nile, while the Roches and Curtis Stigers supplied vocals. Move Over Darling arrived in 1997, and Dawson reappeared in 1999 with the simultaneous releases Spark and Under the Sun.
