Biography
In the closing years of the 1990s, singer/songwriter José González assembled the indie rock group Junip in Gothenburg, Sweden. The three-piece lineup—González on guitar and vocals, drummer Elias Araya, and keyboard player Tobia Winterkorn—produces dark, moody indie folk that echoes the style of its founder. Junip issued its first 7" in 2000 through the band’s own Kakafoni label. Araya subsequently devoted nearly five years to art studies in Norway and Finland, Winterkorn took a teaching position, and González embarked on a thriving solo career. The members reconvened to release the Black Refuge EP in 2006, then turned seriously to writing and recording once González completed promotion for his 2007 album In Our Nature. The resulting full-length, Fields, appeared in 2010 on Mute Records. The trio tracked its more polished and more experimental self-titled second album, issued in 2013, inside their practice space with assistance from co-producer Don Alsterberg.
