Karl Amadeus Hartmann

Within the bounds of classical structure, Hartmann—a principal pupil of Webern—fashioned a chromatic, atonal language and introduced a “variable meter” technique for handling rhythm. His catalog includes nine symphonies together with pieces written across numerous other musical genres.
