Kathryn Grayson distinguished herself as a coloratura soprano through performances in opulent film musicals including Kiss Me Kate and Show Boat. Recordings followed, along with appearances in concerts, nightclubs, radio broadcasts, and television programs. Opera productions also featured her, with roles in La Boheme, La Traviata, and Madame Butterfly.

She entered the world on February 9, 1922, in Winston-Salem, NC. Her upbringing took place in St. Louis as the third child of a real estate professional. Opera studies occupied her childhood years, after which Francis Marshall provided training at the Chicago Civic Opera. An RCA Red Seal Records agreement came her way upon reaching age 15. Yet cinematic opportunities overshadowed operatic pursuits once MGM's Louis B. Mayer encountered Grayson and her singing. Without requiring a screen test, he extended a film contract to the vocalist. Stardom arrived by 1943, propelled by her exceptional voice, ethereal features, and graceful physique. Productions from Paramount and Warner Bros. joined those from MGM in showcasing her talents.

Her private affairs proved more turbulent than professional endeavors. The initial marriage occurred in 1940 through an elopement at 18 years old. Actor John Shelton shared that bond, marked by seven separations and reconciliations until its dissolution in 1946. The next marriage took place the subsequent year. Singer Johnny Johnston became her spouse, resulting in a daughter, though separation followed shortly after the birth. One reconciliation attempt preceded their 1952 divorce. As an infant, their daughter endured nearly twelve months of recovery from a dislocated hip.

A Sarah Siddons Award nomination recognized her portrayal in The Merry Widow. Commencing in 1988 and spanning over ten years, tours presented An Evening with Kathryn Grayson. From 1994 until 1997, she performed Love Letters onstage alongside Van Johnson, after which Red Sox and Roses came next for the duo. Kathryn Grayson passed away on February 17, 2010, at age 88 within her Los Angeles area residence.
