During the 1980s new pagode movement, Katinguelê assembled in São Paulo in 1984. Their track “Doce Sabor” appeared on the Chopapo compilation, titled after a Santo André nightclub that helped popularize the style, and the song received solid radio rotation. The band’s first independent album, Bem no Íntimo, arrived in 1992 and featured the successes “Deusa ou Menina,” “Eleni,” and the title cut. Two years later they issued the likewise self-released Meu Recado, which connected with listeners through “Corpo Lúcido,” “Cilada,” “Pra Gente Matar a Saudade,” and “Separação.”

National recognition followed with the 1995 Warner Bros. release No Compasso do Criador, which moved 700,000 copies on the momentum of “Só Pedindo Bis,” “Recado à Minha Amada,” and the title track. Katinguelê na Área appeared in 1998 and contained one of their signature numbers, “Inaraí,” along with a guest spot from Zeca Pagodinho. Pagodinho rejoined the group for the São Paulo concerts marking its fifteenth anniversary in 1999, shows that yielded a live album, and that same year Katinguelê took part in TV Globo’s year-end special.
