Having grown up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Kay Hanley first rose to pop prominence fronting Letters To Cleo. The band issued Aurora Glory Alice in 1993, earning widespread acclaim from both listeners and reviewers. Wholesale Meats And Fish followed in 1995, yet the album managed only a single week on the Billboard charts. By 1997 the group was unraveling and put out Go!. That year Hanley branched into separate endeavors, portraying Mary Magdalene in the Boston Rock Opera’s staging of Jesus Christ Superstar alongside Gary Cherone. She also began acoustic performances with her husband Michael Eisenstein across the Northeast and on the West Coast, and she welcomed her daughter Zoe. Before contributing songs to the children’s series Generation O, she was recruited to supply the singing voice for Josie & The Pussycats. Returning to the studio in 2001, Hanley completed her first solo project and released Cherry Marmalade on Rounder Records the following year.
