Biography
Complementing his reflective and optimistic lyrics with a softly encouraging musical backdrop, Kem upholds the legacy of the quiet storm radio style made famous by fellow Detroit natives Smokey Robinson and Anita Baker. The vocalist, composer, instrumentalist, and studio craftsman ranks among the most commercially enduring adult contemporary R&B performers since his independently issued debut, Kemistry (2002), secured a contract with Motown Records. Each of his three subsequent studio albums released by the close of the 2010s—Album II (2005), Intimacy: Album III (2010), and Promise to Love (2014)—enjoyed wide popularity, reaching the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 and generating several Grammy nominations. These efforts were later succeeded by Love Always Wins (2020), Kem’s sixth long-player overall.
Born in Nashville and raised in Pontiac, Michigan, as well as his hometown of Detroit, Kem (Kim Lamont Owens) surmounted struggles with substance dependence and lack of stable housing. He financed the creation of his debut album, Kemistry, through employment as a server and as a vocalist in a wedding ensemble. After the 2002 release sold 10,000 copies on its own, Motown acquired it for broader distribution in February 2003. The project climbed into the Top 20 of Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart and received a gold certification from the RIAA, aided by the popular single “Love Calls.” The successor, Album II, appeared in May 2005. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and attained gold status swiftly, later achieving platinum certification nearly a decade afterward. Kem stepped back from recording for several years, though he contributed to the fourth installment of Guru’s Jazzmatazz series.
Kem resurfaced in August 2010 via Intimacy: Album III, which came within a single position of topping the Billboard 200 while extending his run of RIAA-certified projects. Among its four charting singles, “Why Would You Say” proved the strongest, with production assistance from Rex Rideout; the track reached number 17 on the R&B/hip-hop chart and earned Grammy nominations for Best R&B Male Performance and Best R&B Song. Ahead of his fourth regular album, Kem issued the seasonal collection What Christmas Means and composed and produced Ronald Isley’s “My Favorite Thing.” In August 2014 he delivered Promise to Love, a number-three Billboard 200 entry featuring “Nobody,” which received a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance. He subsequently paused his career to establish and nurture a family. Returning under continued Motown backing, he collaborated closely with Derek “D.O.A.” Allen to assemble Love Always Wins, released in August 2020.
