Biography
Kimya Dawson, recognized primarily for her contributions to the anti-folk group the Moldy Peaches, pursued an independent lo-fi path as a solo artist throughout the 2000s. Her initial solo effort came in 2002 with I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean, featuring minimalist compositions centered around acoustic guitar. Following the 2004 pause in Moldy Peaches activities, she persisted in issuing personal recordings. During this period, she supplied eight tracks for the Juno soundtrack, which achieved the top position on charts, thereby expanding her reach, while also venturing into music aimed at children.
Born and raised in Bedford Hills, NY, where her family operated a home-based day-care center, the distinctive songwriter encountered Moldy Peaches co-founder Adam Green in 1995 at a Mt. Kisco, NY record store during her employment there. Over the subsequent four years, she alternated residences between New York and Washington, yet collaborated with Green on songwriting as opportunities arose. Green relocated to Washington in 1999 to join her, leading to the establishment of the Moldy Peaches. After a year, Green headed back to New York, soon followed by Dawson. The expanded ensemble, incorporating Dawson, Green, drummer Strictly Beats, bassist Steve Mertens, and guitarists Jack Dishel and Toby Goodshank, started performing within New York’s anti-folk scene.
Their self-titled debut album appeared in 2001, earning praise from reviewers. All tracks resulted from joint composition and performance by Dawson and Green, prompting tours across domestic and international venues. Dawson extended her collaborations by providing backing vocals on Ben Kweller’s 2002 debut solo release, Sha, Sha. The same year saw the Moldy Peaches enter an open-ended hiatus coinciding with the launch of solo projects from both Dawson and Green. I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean garnered favorable critical response, prompting Dawson to undertake tours spanning Europe and the United States.
Dawson issued two additional collections in 2004 drawn from home recordings: Knock-Knock Who? and My Cute Fiend Sweet Princess. Hidden Vagenda followed later that year via K Records. She reemerged in 2006 through the Kimya Dawson/Matty Pop Chart EP alongside the full-length Remember That I Love You. A notable shift occurred in 2008 as the Juno soundtrack attained multi-platinum status, while K Records put out her debut children’s record, Alphabutt, featuring tracks such as "Wiggle My Tooth," "Little Monster Babies," and "Pee Pee in the Potty."
