South London producer Dylan Richards performs his blends of dubstep, ragga, drum'n'bass and techno-dub under the alias King Cannibal. The 2008 Ninja Tune 12" pairing “Arigami Style” with “Flower of Flesh and Blood” first drew dancers and attention to the project. Early supporters included Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs along with tastemakers Strictly Kev and Amon Tobin. Richards already knew the capital’s club circuit well. After leaving art school he had issued late-’90s mixtapes as DJ Zilla, among them One Foot in the Fire, One Fist in the Air and, alongside Lex Records selector Buddy Peace, A Friendly Game of Chess. Warp Records later enlisted the pair to assemble its 2004 retrospective package; the accompanying tour further raised their profile. Richards next supplied remixes for acts such as Test Icicles and, in 2006, began an EP for Kid606’s Shockout imprint. That single project expanded into two EPs, at which point the King Cannibal moniker was adopted. Following the 2008 Ninja Tune signing and the earlier 12", Richards issued his first full-length as King Cannibal, Let the Night Roar, in October 2009; the title derives from a remark by Jim Jones of the Jonestown Massacre.
