Biography
King Harvest first rose to attention as a French-American rock outfit whose signature single "Dancing in the Moonlight" delivered chart traction in the early 1970s. Their layered vocal blends and relaxed soft-rock rhythms, shaded by folk and country textures, filled several carefully assembled albums, yet the group never recaptured that opening momentum and disbanded in 1976. Over the following decades the track embedded itself among enduring classic-rock standards, reaching fresh listeners via airplay and repeated film and television placements. Occasional reunion shows took place across the years, alongside studio work such as the 2015 release Old Friends.
The band came together in France during 1970 when American expatriates Dave "Doc" Robinson on lead vocals and keys, Eddie Tuleja on guitar, Ron Altbach on keys, Rod Novak on bass and sax, and Wells Kelly on drums united; several members had previously crossed paths at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. While based in Paris they issued recordings under assorted names before settling on King Harvest after triumphing in a local rock competition. The Perception label signed them in 1972, leading to the recording of "Dancing in the Moonlight," a keyboard-driven single showcasing tight harmonies and penned by onetime associate Sherman Kelly, sibling of drummer Wells Kelly. The track scored a substantial hit across the United States and Canada, peaking at number 13 on the pop charts and spurring a full-length album of the same name. Despite the success of that single, the LP failed to enter the Top 100, and only the 1973 follow-up "A Little Bit Like Magic" registered on the charts.
Once back on American soil, King Harvest secured the endorsement of Beach Boys Mike Love and Carl Wilson, resulting in a second self-titled album issued by A&M in 1975. That effort likewise found limited response, prompting the group to disband by 1976. In the ensuing period, several King Harvest members integrated into the Beach Boys’ circle, performing and recording alongside them while also contributing to solo ventures including Mike Love’s Celebration project and Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue album.
As years passed, "Dancing in the Moonlight" persisted on classic-rock playlists and surfaced in productions such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Better Call Saul, Bates Motel, and Girls. The band reconvened periodically, with Novak and Tuleja issuing the 2010 Scandinavia-recorded country set The Prairie Dogs - Country Classics under the King Harvest banner. Their 40th anniversary was marked by a 2012 concert in Upstate New York, followed by another gathering the next year after Robinson’s passing to honor the late vocalist. Old Friends surfaced in 2015. Keyboardist Ron Altbach passed away on February 21, 2023, at the age of 76.
