Cornetist and composer Kirk Knuffke moves fluidly between avant-garde explorations and post-bop settings as both performer and writer. Early notice arrived through mid-2000s appearances alongside Butch Morris, after which he collaborated with other forward-thinking figures such as Uri Caine, Allison Miller, and Michael Formanek. A Jerome Foundation grant recipient, he earned acclaim for the 2008 small-group outing Big Wig and the 2011 duo session Orange Was the Color. Additional trio recordings further reveal his range, among them 2015’s Little Cross featuring Hamid Drake, 2017’s Cherryco with Adam Nussbaum, and 2022’s Gravity Without Airs alongside Matthew Shipp, each incorporating blues-inflected swing alongside raw free improvisation.

Raised in Colorado, Knuffke trained under trumpeter Ron Miles and pianist Art Lande prior to settling in New York City in 2005. Since then he has built a dual profile as sought-after sideman and leader, sharing stages with Roswell Rudd, William Parker, Uri Caine, Myra Melford, John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Billy Hart, Steven Bernstein, Jon Irabagon, and numerous others. He remains a longstanding participant in Butch Morris ensembles, appearing on the 2007 release Nublu Orchestra Conducted by Butch Morris, and maintains regular affiliations with drummer Matt Wilson’s quartet as well as the Steve Lacy tribute group Ideal Bread.

His first album under his own name, 2008’s Big Wig, paired him with trombonist Brian Drye, bassist Reuben Radding, and drummer Jeff Davis across a program spanning free jazz and bop-derived material. The following year brought the trio date Garden of Gifts, recorded with drummer Federico Ughi and guitarist Chris Welcome. Amnesia Brown, a 2010 project uniting him with clarinetist-guitarist Doug Wieselman and drummer Kenny Wollesen, preceded 2014’s Exterminating Angel. Ongoing duo work with pianist Jesse Stacken has yielded thematic surveys of lesser-known jazz repertoire, including the 2009 Monk- and Ellington-focused Mockingbird and the 2011 Mingus-centered Orange Was the Color.

In 2015 Knuffke recorded Little Cross with drummer Hamid Drake and keyboardist Jamie Saft, received DownBeat’s Rising Star honor in the critics’ poll, and issued the trio album Arms & Hands featuring bassist Mark Helias and drummer Bill Goodwin. The next year he appeared on Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom release Otis Was a Polar Bear and rejoined Matt Wilson for Beginning of a Memory. Cherryco, another trio effort recorded with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Adam Nussbaum, followed in 2017. Gravity Without Airs, issued in 2022, once again placed Knuffke at the head of a trio completed by pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist Michael Bisio.
