Biography
Kishore "Baba" Kumar, born Kishore Kumar Ganguly, ranked among India's foremost entertainers during the closing decades of the twentieth century. Lacking any structured vocal instruction, he nevertheless emerged as one of the nation's most cherished singers, screen performers, and comic talents.
Contradictions marked his personal path. He avoided tobacco, alcohol, and social gatherings yet wed four of Hindi cinema's prominent leading actresses—Ruma Devi, Madhubala, Yogita Bali, and Leena Chandavarkar. Though he appeared in many lighthearted productions, his ambition to portray romantic leads in the manner of his brother Ashok Kumar remained unfulfilled; only the films he himself produced afforded him dramatic parts, notably Door Gagan Ke Chaon Mein (Koi Lauta De Mere Beete Huen Din) in 1964 and Door Ka Rahi in 1971.
Music reached him through his mother Dhananjay Banerjee, a classical vocalist. His initial inspiration was K.I. Saigal, the celebrated singer-actor. In the late 1940s he journeyed to Bombay hoping to encounter Saigal. The introduction never occurred, yet Saraswati Devi accepted him into her chorus, after which composer Khemchand Prakash took notice. Prakash selected him in 1948 to perform "Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangu" for the Dev Anand vehicle Ziddi and later delivered his breakthrough number "Jagmag Jagmag Karta Nikla Chand Poonam Ka Pyara."
From the early 1950s onward Kumar collaborated with director S.D. Burman. A serious dispute in 1958 interrupted their partnership until 1965, after which Kumar contributed 112 songs to Burman's pictures; the association concluded only with Burman's passing in 1975.
His acting breakthrough arrived with the 1953 release Ladki. He also featured in the commercial success Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi and joined his brothers Ashok and Anup in the popular Chalti ka Naam Gadi and Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi.
Commercial and critical momentum peaked during the mid-1960s. Following the box-office performance of Teen Deviyan in 1965, he delivered his most celebrated picture, Anandhana, in 1969.
Fortune reversed abruptly in 1976. After declining to appear at a Delhi event honoring Sanjay Khan, authorities barred his recordings from All India Radio and Doordarshan and sought to halt distribution of his discs.
He continued recording until the evening prior to his fatal heart attack, when he laid down a duet alongside Asha Bhosle.
