Music has long served as a vehicle for the political convictions of violinist and composer Klaus der Geiger, born Klaus von Wrochem. Since taking to the streets as a performer in 1970, he has used his music to protest housing shortages as well as restrictions on tenant and human rights. Beyond staging numerous benefit concerts for the homeless, Der Geiger has joined repeated protests against shipments of radioactive whey powder destined for Third World nations. Born in the modest German town of Doppoldiswalde, situated midway between Dresden and Dubi, he pursued his training in Cologne with American composer Mauricio Kagel. In the late 1960s he journeyed to the United States, where his politically charged street performances drew notice in both Boston and San Diego. After authorities denied his application to extend his visa on account of his outspoken views, he returned to Germany.
