Recognized across Germany as a prominent figure for many years, Kurt Edelhagen directed orchestras that prioritized lively swing-oriented dance music yet allowed room for bebop-flavored improvisations. After completing studies in piano and conducting, he assembled his initial large ensemble in 1946. Naturally gifted at leading groups, Edelhagen took charge of radio-affiliated bands in Frankfurt, later worked in Nuremberg from 1949 to 1952, and achieved particular distinction guiding the Sudwestfunk orchestra between 1952 and 1957, an ensemble that occasionally drew inspiration from Stan Kenton. Moving in 1957 to Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne, he oversaw a unit that eventually featured trumpeters Dusko Goykovich and Jimmy Deuchar, altoist Derek Humble, and trombonist Jiggs Whigham. Edelhagen continued directing this ensemble until its dissolution in 1973, after which he stayed partially active until shortly before his passing. Between 1949 and 1972 he documented his work on disc with some regularity inside Germany, although only a single release issued by Golden Era reached listeners in the U.S.
