Biography
Senegal's independence in 1960 prompted the Senegal-born singer Laleh Sosseh to establish the Star Band du Dakar, drawing from the Cuban dance sounds prevalent during the 1940s and 1950s. Papa Seck joined Sosseh as co-lead vocalist, propelling the ensemble to prominence within the African musical landscape. Their zenith arrived during the late 1970s amid the inclusion of a youthful Youssou N'Dour, yet the energetic blend of African and Latin rhythms from Sosseh and the Star Band du Dakar has sustained its capacity to move audiences on the dance floor well beyond twenty years afterward.
