Biography
Established in 1970 with backing from Mali's Ministry of Information, the Rail Band held its status as the country's leading big band across many years. Serving as the resident group at Bamako's Buffet de La Gare—a position it maintains to this day—the ensemble reworked indigenous instruments and musical traditions to suit contemporary urban listeners. Over time it functioned as an essential proving ground for leading Malian performers, with numerous future figures such as Salif Keita and Mory Kante moving through its lineup. During the 1980s economic downturn, the Rail Band counted among the handful of large ensembles that persisted, aided by state support, worldwide recognition, and its deep-rooted standing as a national cultural landmark. After Keita and Kante attained their own global successes, fresh public attention further secured the group's ongoing stability and achievements.
