Biography
Janice Fyffe entered the world on 7 May 1968 in Spanish Town, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She launched her DJ career alongside Maurice Johnson’s Black Scorpio sound system, quickly building a following that extended well beyond its immediate circle. Her first studio session took place in 1988 under producer Gussie Clarke, who built Lady G’s “Nuff Respect” on the foundation of J.C. Lodge’s earlier hit “Telephone Love.” The track delivered a pointed message to chauvinists and rapidly turned into a rallying anthem for ragga girls. Widely regarded as the leading female DJ of her generation, she paired with Papa San on “Round Table Talk,” a Jamaican number-one single that featured the pair trading playful insults in a staged dispute ultimately settled in Lady G’s favor. Additional successes before a brief career pause included “Rock Back” and “Is It Me Or The Gun.” The hiatus gave the single mother space to focus on raising her two children. She reappeared in 1994 with a striking performance at the yearly Fresh concert. By spring 1995 she had joined Chevelle Franklin for “The Real Slam,” a direct counter to the wave of male DJ tracks on the subject begun by Beenie Man. The same year the pair cut the socially conscious “Thank You” for Exterminator on the “No Woman No Cry” rhythm and laid down “Love And Hate” at Donovan Germain’s Penthouse studio, further cementing their partnership. In 1997 Lady G became part of Danny Browne’s Main Street Crew and, alongside Crissy D., released “Provide The Wine.” Three years later the two vocalists collaborated with the UK-based B15 Project on “Girls Like Us.”
