Biography
Having built a following through years with the merengue outfit Ilegales, Dominican bachata-pop singer Leny launched his independent path in 2008. Originally Leydin Pímentel from San José de Ocoa, Dominican Republic, the vocalist trained on piano during his schooling and appeared with the family-led Pimentel Band. At fifteen he entered the merengue quartet Sin Fronteras, then received an invitation in 2001 from lead singer, songwriter, and producer Vladimir Dotel to join the larger merengue act Ilegales—several years after the automobile accident that took the life of member Jason González. Leny first appeared on an Ilegales record with Marca Registrada (2002) and supplied his initial composition on the next release, In the Room (2004), the hit single “No Queda Nada.” After the group’s La Republica (2006), he stepped out alone and delivered his debut full-length album One (2008) on Universal Music Latino. Crafted by Dotel, who shared writing duties on most tracks with Leny, the project introduced the hit single “Ayer Cuando Te Vi.”
