Long before turning thirty, the Brazilian prodigy Lucas Santtana had already soaked up more sounds than most career musicians absorb across decades, thanks to global travels alongside the leading figures of Brazilian Tropicalia. Those wide-ranging sources—spanning Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Motown funk, Brazilian metal in the vein of Sepultura, and European electronica—later enabled him to craft entirely singular sonic textures. Yet his initial breakthrough came simply as a flautist.

Born in Bahia, the young musician first gained notice in his early twenties after Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso discovered him. He contributed flute to Gil’s Acoustic and Veloso’s Tropicalia 2, both released in 1994, and soon joined the pair for a European tour. Over the following years his exposure to music outside Brazil grew steadily. Back home he collaborated with Chico Science and other forward-thinking Brazilian radicals while also producing sessions for artists such as Arto Lindsay, all the while awaiting his own moment.

That opportunity arrived at the millennium with the release of his debut album, Eletro Ben Dodo, which earned warm international press attention. Emerging from the influence of Gil and Veloso, he demonstrated that classic Brazilian Tropicalia could be reshaped for a global pop audience. Drawing on sources from James Brown to Caetano and Gil, he fashioned a remarkably diverse yet cohesive sound, establishing himself as one of the most compelling musical figures south of the equator.
