In Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, Mombojó assembled in 2001 with Felipe S handling vocals, Chiquinho on keyboard and sampler, Marcelo Campello contributing acoustic guitar and cavaquinho, Marcelo Machado on electric guitar, Rafa playing flute, Samuel on bass, and Vicente Machado supplying percussion. The teenage ensemble quickly captured the interest of leading Brazilian critics including Sílvio Essinger during 2002, while delivering striking live sets at local events and festivals throughout Recife. They soon tracked and issued their debut album Nadadenovo, whose blend of accessible rock with bossa nova, lounge textures, surf music, jazz, psychedelics, and samba earned widespread critical approval. Observers noted the sophisticated arrangements, creative consistency, and intricate melodic lines as especially striking given the members’ youth, and the release promptly positioned Mombojó among the country’s most compelling and promising rock outfits. Anticipation therefore ran high for the follow-up Homem Espuma, which appeared in 2006 on the Trama imprint. Though it fell short of the first record’s impact, the album confirmed Mombojó’s status as one of Brazil’s most distinctive and compelling acts.
