Pato Fu drew formative inspiration from Os Mutantes through its two-men-and-a-woman lineup, its sonic palette, and its deployment of humor and satire laced with São Paulo’s redneck accent. The group has issued five albums to date and first reached nationwide audiences in 1995, when Gol de Quem? placed the band among the most frequently aired acts on Brazilian radio, secured television appearances, and supported extensive touring across the country. Between April and May 1993 the trio laid down its debut, Rotomusic de Liquidificapum, which met with modest commercial response. In April 1994 the musicians signed with BMG Ariola and tracked Gol de Quem? the following August and September; the album appeared in March 1995 and reached stores in April. Its opening success came with the single “Sobre o Tempo.” That August Pato Fu claimed the Best Artist/Revelation Band prize at the inaugural MTV Video Awards Brasil for the same track. October brought the addition of Xande Tamietti as the band’s permanent drummer. In January 1996 the group performed at Hollywood Rock festivals in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. August saw the release of Tem Mas Acabou at the Palace in São Paulo; during the same month the band earned five nominations at MTV Video Music Brasil ’96 yet left empty-handed. November 1997 marked the presentation of José Eduardo Belmonte’s short film 5 Filmes Estrangeiros, scored by Pato Fu, at the XXX Festival de Brasília de Cinema Brasileiro. April 1998 brought the launch of Televisão de cachorro on São Paulo’s Rádio Cultura AM; the album enjoyed strong sales behind the tracks “Antes Que Seja Tarde,” “Eu Sei,” and “Canção Pra Você Viver Mais.” Isopor followed in 1999, and in January 2001 the band appeared at the Rock in Rio Festival.
