Zeca Baleiro launched his stage career in São Luís do Maranhão around 1975. He later spent years writing and performing across Belo Horizonte and São Paulo before Gal Costa selected him for her Acústico MTV special in 1997, an invitation that opened major doors. His debut releases, Por Onde Andará Stephen Fry? and Vô Imbolá, each earned gold certification, and the latter also brought a 2000 Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Album category. In 1999 APCA named him Best Singer, while the previous year he collected three Sharp awards in the pop/rock field for best song, best album, and revelation. Tracks from his first album appeared on soundtracks for TV Globo telenovelas, and “Samba do Approach,” taken from the second album, featured in the network’s series Mulheres. International stages soon followed in Cannes, Montreux, Porto, and Cartagena. Baleiro composed the score for Ivaldo Bertazzo’s Mãe Gentil and joined the Os 5 no Palco collective alongside Lenine, Chico César, Paulinho Moska, and Marcos Suzano; he further contributed to Songbook Chico Buarque, the Sérgio Sampaio tribute Balaio do Sampaio, and Martinho da Vila’s Projeto Lusofonia. He also served as producer for Ceumar and for Patrícia Amaral, while his own clip “Proibida Pra Mim” received cinema exhibition.
