Skank came together in Belo Horizonte MG during 1991 and rose to become one of Brazil’s most widely followed acts throughout the 1990s. Drawing on pop, reggae, ska, and rock & roll, the group entered the recording scene with its debut independent release, the self-titled Skank, which included the successful single “Tanto,” a reggae adaptation of Bob Dylan’s “I Want You.” The follow-up album, Calango, yielded multiple chart entries, among them “É Proibido Fumar,” originally written by Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos, at the peak of the Jovem Guarda resurgence. By the time the band issued its fifth studio effort, Maquinarama, its direction had shifted noticeably as funk, soul, surf, drum’n’bass, bossa nova, and Latin pop elements began to shape the arrangements. Additional well-known tracks from the group encompass “Garota Nacional,” “Pacato Cidadão,” “É Uma Partida de Futebol,” “Jackie Tequila,” and “Tão Seu.”
