Brief periods of study took Brouwer to the Juilliard School, where Vincent Persichetti served as his instructor, and to the Hartt College of Music. Positions held by him include music assistant at Radio Havana and composition professor at the Havana Conservatory. Since 1961 a government stipend has supported his musical endeavors. Nationalist elements characterize Brouwer's initial compositions, alongside his engagement with questions surrounding the role of artists within a revolutionary context. Avant-garde methods have appeared in his output from 1962 onward, as evidenced by Sonata pian'e forte (1970) scored for piano and tape.
