Biography
Promoters have frequently hailed Liona Boyd with the honorific “First Lady of the Guitar,” a label she has consistently justified. From the early 1980s onward she ranked among the most widely followed classical guitarists while also venturing into vocal crossover and pop material following a diagnosis of focal dystonia.
She entered the world in London on July 11, 1949, and passed the second half of her childhood in Toronto. Guitar lessons began at age thirteen under Eli Kassner, after which she worked with Narciso Yepes, Andrés Segovia—whose hometown of Linares, Spain, had likewise sheltered Boyd’s paternal grandmother—and her youthful idol Julian Bream. An invitation to present several classical pieces at a Gordon Lightfoot concert drew an ardent response, prompting her to accompany his ensemble on a well-received tour as opening act. Extensive Canadian concert dates and repeated national-television spots ensued. Already drawn to both popular and classical idioms, she issued her first album, The Guitar, in 1973 on Boot Records, the label founded by country artist Stompin’ Tom Connors. Country guitarist Chet Atkins, impressed by her Nashville appearance, facilitated a guest spot on the American program Today. She subsequently joined Atkins and two fellow classical guitarists for the country-classical hybrid The First Nashville Guitar Quartet. Non-classical stages continued to host her alongside conventional recitals in leading concert venues worldwide.
Her momentum persisted through the closing decades of the twentieth century and well into the 2000s. Roughly twenty albums had appeared on major imprints such as RCA, Sony, and Polygram by 2002. Public interest also centered on her private affairs, notably an eight-year relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau that concluded in 1983. She addressed that chapter openly in her 1998 memoir In My Own Key, which interweaves professional and personal narratives. Marriage to California real-estate developer John Simon prompted a 1992 move to Beverly Hills. Among later releases, Whispers of Love (2000) incorporated several of her own compositions, while Camino Latino (2002) blended Latin idioms and featured jazz musicians. Two further projects arrived in 2009: Liona Sings Songs of Love, comprising seventeen duets with guitarist Srdjan Givoje, and Seven Journeys: Music for the Soul and Imagination, a collaboration with guitarist-producer Peter Bond.
Since founding Moston Records in 1995 she has leaned increasingly toward crossover, pop, easy-listening, and new-age styles; the 2015 album Relaxing Guitar for Insomnia, Dreaming & Romance exemplifies the penultimate category. Classical repertoire nevertheless remained, as evidenced by the 1999 collection Baroque Favorites. A diagnosis of focal dystonia contributed to her stylistic shift and eventual turn toward vocal music. The 2017 album No Remedy for Love appeared alongside a book of the same name, her second memoir. She returned in 2023 with the recital disc Once Upon a Time, devoted entirely to original compositions. At that point her discography encompassed approximately thirty-five digital releases in addition to earlier LP-era titles.
