Lionlimb, the Nashville-rooted psych-tinged indie ensemble, revolves around singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stewart Bronaugh. Releases such as the 2018 album Tape Recorder and 2021’s Spiral Groove wove together strands stretching from experimental rock to opulent chamber pop. Limbo, an atmospheric 2024 set, incorporated a duet with longtime collaborator Angel Olsen.

The project first took shape in 2010 as Bronaugh’s solo outlet. Raised in Nashville, he began playing guitar and piano in childhood and, as a teenager, started writing and capturing his own material. Lionlimb was set aside for several years while Bronaugh worked in Chicago and San Francisco. After returning to Nashville in 2014, he revived the endeavor alongside drummer Joshua Jaeger. During the same period in which they served as Angel Olsen’s live backing band, Lionlimb issued its 2016 debut, the Robin Eaton-produced Shoo. Following a European tour, the group reentered the studio and surfaced in 2018 with the orchestral-leaning Tape Recorder, on which Bronaugh notated much of the music and added cello, violin, and bass clarinet.

Spiral Groove, Lionlimb’s third album and one written while Bronaugh recovered from a seizure, arrived in 2021 and probed even denser sonic layers while addressing sobriety, fragility, and romance. In 2024 the band issued Limbo, where Bronaugh pursued comparably atmospheric textures alongside Angel Olsen and further female vocalists Ewa Synowiec, Justine Orrall, Bri Abram, Zoey Huynh, and Taylor Belle.
