Biography
Originating in Finland, the folk quartet Loituma assembled while its members pursued studies in the folk music department at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy of Music. Grounded in Finnish vocal and kantele traditions, the ensemble creates four-part settings for both the Finnish harp and unaccompanied voices, moving across a spectrum from vigorous to spectral textures. Their debut recording appeared first on the Sibelius Academy’s own imprint as a self-titled release and subsequently reached American listeners in revised form through Northside under the title Things of Beauty. In the same year, Loituma was named 1997 Band of the Year at the Kaustinen Folkmusic Festival.
