Born Egbert Moore, Lord Beginner played a pivotal role in reviving calypso during the 1940s and 1950s. His soulful performances in Trinidad and Tobago first caught notice, prompting expatriate Portuguese businessman Edward Sa Gomes to arrange a trip to New York for Lord Beginner, Attila The Hun, and Growling Tiger to cut sides for the Port-Of-Spain label in May 1934. Those sessions soon brought calypso to audiences across much of the globe. Lord Beginner relocated to England with Lord Kitchener in July 1948 and, two years afterward, began recording for Parlophone.
