Lorne Balfe, a producer and composer who has received a Grammy, has built a reputation through his contributions to film, television, and video game soundtracks. As a protégé of Hans Zimmer, he has received recognition for his work on major releases such as Mission Impossible: Fallout in 2018, Black Adam in 2022, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024.
He entered the world in Inverness, Scotland, during 1976 amid a household filled with music and took up the piano early on. Already demonstrating strong ability, Balfe supported himself in his teenage years by creating jingles for advertisements before shifting his focus to television scoring. Following time spent in London, he moved to California and became part of the team at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica. Through this association he contributed to projects including Batman Begins, The Da Vinci Code, and Transformers.
Balfe shared the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media with Zimmer and James Newton Howard for their work on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. His partnership with Zimmer on the 2010 animated feature Megamind marked a turning point that opened doors for independent scoring opportunities. During this period he also gained notice in the gaming sphere with Crysis 2, Skylanders, Assassin's Creed: Revelations alongside Jesper Kyd, and Assassin's Creed III, the latter two of which received BAFTA nominations for Best Original Music.
While maintaining ties to Zimmer, Balfe established himself as a sought-after composer on his own, handling Salinger in 2013, Penguins of Madagascar in 2014, and Terminator Genisys in 2015. He delivered the score for The Lego Batman Movie in 2017, served as score producer on the war drama Dunkirk that same year, and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Main Title Theme through his collaboration with Zimmer on the National Geographic series Genius about Albert Einstein. In 2018 he composed for Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Fallout and followed with several 2019 assignments that encompassed the series His Dark Materials, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller Gemini Man, and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground. Balfe reunited with Zimmer for the 2020 documentary Rebuilding Paradise directed by Ron Howard, which examined the 2018 California wildfires, and he also scored the 2020 action comedy Bad Boys for Life starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
Among more than a dozen projects completed over the subsequent two years were Outside the Wire in 2021, the Marvel film Black Widow, and Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, whose soundtrack drew on the combined efforts of Balfe, Zimmer, Harold Faltermeyer, and Lady Gaga. In that same year he created the score for the DC Comics hit Black Adam, setting its driving intensity against the gentler, melodic style he brought to the Julia Roberts-George Clooney romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise. He maintained a steady pace with large-scale assignments across 2023 and 2024, including Gran Turismo, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Beverly Hills Cop: Alex F, the last of which wove in elements from the franchise’s earlier music by Harold Faltermeyer.
