Biography
For nearly fifty years, los Munequitos De Matanzas ranked among Cuba’s foremost rhumba ensembles before steadily extending their reach throughout North America. Appearances across the United States in 1992, 1996, 1998, and 1999 positioned the ensemble as one of Cuba’s most distinguished cultural ambassadors abroad.
Created as a lively company of dancers, drummers, and vocalists, los Munequintos De Matanzas began when a circle of young musicians started striking rhythms on plates and bottles while listening to a recording by Arsenio Rodriguez inside a tavern in Barrio Marina, Matanzas, Cuba. The ensemble continues to draw from the Abakwa (Efik/Efo) traditions of Africa.
Leadership rests with general director, dancer, and guagua player Diosdado Ramos Cruz together with musical director, composer, and quinto, cajon, Iya bata, and percussion player Jesus Alfonso Miro.
