Biography
La Lupe, born Guadalupe Victoria Yoli Raymond, first entered music near the close of her teacher training through live appearances in assorted public venues. Also known as La Yiyiyi, the artist moved to New York in 1962, formed a connection with percussionist Mongo Santamaría, and issued the album Mongo Introduces La Lupe the following year. After a prosperous decade the Cuban singer released Un Encuentro con la Lupe in 1974, which opened the way to a Carnegie Hall performance in New York in 1975 and a partnership with Tito Puente that produced the 1978 album La Pareja. She died in a New York hospital in February 1992.
