Joe Arroyo, born Alvaro Jose Arroyo Gonzalez in Colombia, produced rhythms that fueled dancing by incorporating an eclectic mix of Caribbean genres like salsa, compas, merengue, reggae, and soca. After his tenure in the prominent salsa outfit Fruko y Sus Tesos, he carried forward that fusion of influences once he launched his own ensemble, La Verdad, whose English translation is The Truth, in 1981.

His vocal journey started early, at age eight, when he performed in a strip club situated in his native Cartagena. A decisive opening arrived in 1971 after he joined the Discos Fuentes roster and caught the ear of Ernesto Estrada, a multifaceted musician serving as bassist, singer, composer, and producer who went by the name Fruko and promptly brought him aboard the band. Arroyo stayed with Fruko across the following ten years. Though a drug overdose nearly proved fatal in the early 1980s, he survived and drew notice through La Verdad. On July 26, 2011, he passed away inside a hospital in Barranquilla, Colombia, the same day the Latin Recording Academy disclosed his selection as a 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
