Biography
Marc Anthony ranks among the most versatile figures in entertainment as a vocalist, performer, thespian, tunesmith, studio overseer, and clothing-line creator. Widely acknowledged as a leading global pop attraction, he stands as the all-time best-selling salsa interpreter and the undisputed successor to the legacy left by the departed Héctor Lavoe. Tens of millions of recordings bear his name, while multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy trophies, along with scores of additional honors, fill his cabinet. Beginning with the 1997 album Contra La Corriente, he has maintained a steady presence on Billboard’s Top 200 and Top Ten Latin Albums lists, a run that encompasses 2007’s El Cantante, 2013’s 3.0, and the multi-platinum-certified Opus issued in 2019. On screen he has taken lead and supporting parts in motion pictures such as The Substitute, Big Night, and Blue in the Face. He portrayed Lavoe in El Cantante, maintained a recurring television role on Hawthorne, and stepped onto Broadway stages in productions that included Paul Simon’s The Capeman. Although firmly established as one of the premier salseros to surface during the twentieth century, Anthony keeps pushing boundaries by absorbing fresh currents in Latin and pop music; traces of hip-hop, electro, rock, soul, and trap surface in his work, notably on the Grammy- and Latin Grammy-winning Pa'llá Voy of 2022 and the 2024 release Muevense.
His father imparted formal lessons in music theory and composition to the New York City native born in 1968. Early exposure came through Latin figures such as Rubén Blades, Héctor Lavoe, and Willie Colón, alongside mainstream pop recordings by Air Supply and José Feliciano. At twelve, Anthony and his sister drew the attention of David Harris, a producer specializing in demos and commercials, leading to background vocal sessions on several projects. Songwriting aptitude soon surfaced when an early piece, “Boy, I've Been Told,” climbed to the Top 40 as a hip-hop hit recorded by schoolmate Safire. Background contributions followed on Safire’s debut album as well as releases by the Latin Rascals and Menudo.
Producer and disc jockey Little Louie Vega joined Anthony for the 1991 debut When the Night Is Over, a Latin hip-hop effort featuring guest spots from Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. The single “Ride on the Rhythm” topped Billboard’s dance charts. On 22 November 1991 Anthony opened for Puente at Madison Square Garden during a concert marking the bandleader’s 100th album release. Sergio George produced and arranged the follow-up Otra Nota, which better highlighted Anthony’s salsa foundation and contained the original “Juego o Amor.” The 1995 set Todo a Su Tiempo extended the George partnership.
Angel “Cucco” Peña took over production and arrangement duties for the fourth album, Contra la Corriente, which earned the 1999 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. A self-titled English-language project appeared the same year as a deliberate bid for broader mainstream appeal, reaching the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 while “I Need to Know” climbed to number three. Though 2002’s Mended achieved even stronger commercial results, Anthony maintained a parallel output of Spanish-language recordings rooted in tradition, among them 2001’s Libre and 2004’s Amar sin Mentiras. His portrayal of salsa pioneer Héctor Lavoe in the 2007 film El Cantante, which co-starred then-wife Jennifer Lopez, elevated his visibility further. Anthony supplied all of Lavoe’s vocals for the picture, and the accompanying soundtrack album presented those performances.
Iconos, another Latin collection of classic pop-ballad covers, surfaced in 2010. Anthony and Lopez parted ways in 2011 and finalized their divorce the following year, yet continued collaborating on the Latin talent competition Q'Viva! The Chosen. He contributed to Robi Draco Rosa’s 2013 comeback recording Vida, released after the artist’s cancer treatment. That spring also brought “Vivir Mi Vida,” which held the top position on Billboard’s Latin Songs chart for eighteen consecutive weeks and thereby became the longest-running number-one salsa single in chart history. The eagerly awaited return-to-salsa project 3.0 arrived in July, Anthony’s first collection of original tropical material in nearly a decade, and captured the Latin Grammy for Recording of the Year. Following extensive work in television and film, he launched the “Legacy Tour” in 2018 to revisit material from across his catalog. In September he issued the multi-platinum Latin-trap track “Está Rico” alongside Bad Bunny and Will Smith, then joined Prince Royce on the hit “Adicto.” Strong ticket sales prompted an extension of the tour into 2019. Opus followed in May, topping the Top Latin Albums chart and reaching number two on Tropical Albums; it shared one of two Grammys awarded for Best Tropical Album that year, tying with Aymée Nuviola’s A Journey Through Cuban Music.
Pa'llá Voy appeared in full in March 2022, reuniting Anthony with producer Sergio George from the Otra Nota era. The title track reworked a cover of the Senegalese band Africando’s “Yay Boy,” originally performed in Wolof and issued in 1994 on their album Tierra Traditional, Vol. 2. Anthony’s version incorporated New York’s instrumental-leaning salsa gorda style that gained prominence in the 1980s. The single debuted at number four on the Tropical Airplay chart. Pa'llá Voy reached number 20 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums tally and number three on Tropical Albums, securing the Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album and the Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album while earning Gold certification.
Following joint efforts that included the 2023 track “La Fórmula” with Colombian artist Maluma, Anthony opened 2024 with the bachata-tinged solo single “Punta Cana.” He again partnered with George for the album Muevense. Issued in April, the ten-track collection reinforced roots-oriented tropical salsa, bachata, and merengue delivered by a tight ensemble. A male backing chorus added striking harmonies to the title song. Love-themed material on the record featured “Amarte a la Antigua” and “Pasemos a los Besos.” Muevense registered strong initial placements inside the Top 40 across eight countries.
