Born in Puerto Rico and raised stateside, Tito Nieves—originally named Humberto Nieves—launched his professional path as a member of Cimarron, the New York orchestra. In 1977 he linked up with Héctor Lavoe, then entered Conjunto Clásico shortly afterward. Launching a solo trajectory in 1986, he distinguished himself by delivering salsa material in English and scored a breakthrough chart-topper in 1997 with the single “I Like It Like That.” Among the cornerstone releases that followed were Classic in 1988, Yo Quiero Cantar in 1989, Fabricando Fantasias in 2004, Hoy, Manana y Siempre in 2006, Pura Salsa Live in 2007, and the 2008 tribute collection Canciones Clasicas de Marco Antonio Solis, which reached number 15 on Latin Heatseekers and number 23 on Top Latin Albums. While Nieves spent more than a year on the road supporting that project, his 2010 studio album Entre Familia entered the charts at number 15 on Top Latin Albums and number two on Tropical Albums; two years later Que Seas Feliz peaked at number 23. His singles continued to land inside the Top 20 and his albums maintained steady chart presence throughout the ensuing period. Mis Mejores Recuerdos, issued in 2014, climbed to number seven on Tropical Albums, and its follow-up, the 2015 release En Dos Idiomas on the newly founded Tito Nieves Creations imprint, advanced to number four. Despite heading his own label, Nieves maintained an intensive touring schedule for the next two years before returning in 2017 with Canciones Que No Se Olvidan and the holiday set Navidad a Mi Estilo later that same year. Teaming once more with producer Sergio George, he closed 2018 by issuing the compilation Una Historia Musical, which blended live recordings with previously unheard tracks.
