Biography
Dominican vocalist Andy Andy surfaced among a select group of performers pushing the boundaries of bachata after 2000. Belonging to the renowned Villalona family, he first built a professional career performing merengue before pivoting to bachata amid its rising popularity. His first album, Aqui Conmigo, appeared in 2002 and earned a 2003 nomination from Billboard for Best New Artist in the Tropical field. The follow-up project Necesito un Amor received a Latin Grammy nod in the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category. That same year the New York State government honored his ongoing efforts on behalf of Latino youth. In 2005 Andy Andy launched his own imprint, Wepa Music, and issued the third album Ironía under that banner. The single “Que Ironia” received airplay across bachata, ballad, and reggaeton formats, expanding his reach further than before; the project topped Billboard’s Top Tropical Albums chart in both 2005 and 2006 while also reaching number ten on the Top Independent Albums tally. His fourth studio album, Tu Me Haces Falta, arrived in 2007 and registered across multiple Billboard rankings once more.
