Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin ranks among the most prominent figures in Latin music worldwide, a singer and actor whose polished yet vibrant approach to pop has earned him international acclaim. He first rose to prominence during his teenage years as the frontman of the celebrated boy band Menudo, later earning critical notice from Mexican cinema and taking on the role of bartender Miguel Morez in the U.S. soap opera General Hospital. Although his 1998 solo release Vuelve secured a Grammy, the English-language album Ricky Martin from 1999 transformed him into a household name. Powered by the chart-topping singles "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "She's All I Ever Had," that project reached the summit of the Billboard 200 and moved more than 15 million copies globally. Beyond establishing the Ricky Martin Foundation as a charitable organization, he has sustained his career with multiple platinum-certified projects, among them Sound Loaded in 2000, Life in 2005, and the Grammy-winning A Quien Quiera Escuchar from 2015. Fresh entries on the Billboard Latin charts arrived in 2020 and 2021 via the EPs Pausa and Play.

Born December 24, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martin participated in choir performances and school theatrical productions as a youngster. At age six he began appearing in television commercials, and soon afterward pursued formal training in both singing and acting that prepared him for Menudo auditions. In 1984, at twelve years old, he joined the group and appeared on the album Evolución; over the ensuing five years he served as lead vocalist, contributing to their global breakthrough. After departing Menudo in 1989 upon outgrowing the ensemble, he returned to Puerto Rico to finish high school.

Following graduation, Martin lived briefly in New York before relocating to Mexico, where he spent a year performing on stage and then reentered the recording industry. His self-titled debut arrived in 1991, co-written with former Menudo member Robi Rosa, who continued as a frequent collaborator throughout Martin’s career, sometimes listed as Ian Blake; the set achieved notable success on Latin charts. Two years later the Juan Carlos Calderón-produced Me Amarás became an even stronger commercial performer, elevating him to major-star status across Latin America.

Martin entered the cast of General Hospital in January 1994 as Miguel Morez. The part’s popularity led directly to a Broadway engagement in Les Misérables as Marius, prompting his exit from the soap after roughly a year. His third album, A Medio Vivir, surfaced in 1995 and introduced a harder rock sound alongside Latin elements such as flamenco and cumbia, ultimately reaching number eleven on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart. Early 1998 brought the fourth album Vuelve, which ascended to number one on the Latin charts and entered the Top 40 of the Billboard 200. Produced by K.C. Porter with co-production from Draco Rosa and Desmond Child, it yielded singles including "Perdido Sin Tí" and "La Copa de la Vida," the latter adopted as the official 1998 FIFA World Cup anthem under the title "The Cup of Life." Martin delivered that song at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, where Vuelve claimed Best Latin Pop Performance.

Still capitalizing on the favorable Grammy appearance, Martin issued his first English-language pop album in spring 1999, again titled Ricky Martin. It topped the Billboard 200 and established him as an international superstar through the massive singles "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "She's All I Ever Had." Sound Loaded followed in 2000 with comparable impact. Spanish-language hits were anthologized on 2001’s La Historia, while 2003’s Almas del Silencio offered fresh Spanish material. Life in 2005 marked a return to English-language pop, and MTV Unplugged appeared the next year in both CD and DVD editions.

After that unplugged concert’s success, Martin launched a worldwide tour in 2007, documented later that year by a live CD and DVD titled Black and White Tour. Upon concluding his final performance at Madison Square Garden, he stepped away from music to attend to personal matters, although the Spanish-hits compilation 17 was released in 2008. In March 2010 he publicly disclosed his identity as a gay man via a statement on his official website; that November he published a candid autobiography. He reemerged in 2011 with the ninth studio album Música + Alma + Sexo, featuring contributions from Joss Stone, Natalia Jiménez, Claudia Leitte, and reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel; it reached number three on the Billboard 200 and led the Latin charts.

Martin subsequently devoted time to his Ricky Martin Foundation and announced a new collection of romantic songs prompted by the conclusion of a long-term relationship. Its first advance single, "Adios," appeared in October 2014, followed in January 2015 by "Disparo al Corazon." That same month an elaborate online hoax falsely claimed his death; he quickly dispelled the rumor on Instagram. His tenth studio album, A Quien Quiera Escuchar, arrived the following month, charting inside the Top Five and claiming the top position on Latin albums charts during the first week of 2016. In September he released the hit single "Vente Pa' Ca" featuring Colombian singer Maluma.

"Fiebre," again with Wisin & Yandel, surfaced in 2018. That year Martin portrayed model and fashion designer Antonio D'Amico in the miniseries The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, earning an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. He resumed music in 2020 with the EPs Pausa, oriented toward ballads, and Play, leaning dance-oriented. Pausa, issued first in May, included "Cántalo" with Residente and Bad Bunny, "Tiburones," and "Simple" with Sting, securing the Latin Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. Early 2021 brought the collaboration "Qué Rico Fuera" with Chilean-American singer Paloma Mami, the initial single from Play, which followed later that year; another Play track, "Otra Noche en L.A.," arrived in January 2022.
