Biography
Luis Fonsi has built a career as a multi-platinum recording artist who also acts and hosts television programs. Early in his trajectory he was cast as a vocalist of romantic ballads marked by theatrical intensity and lush orchestral backdrops, yet that persona never fully captured the breadth of his abilities. After Comenzaré appeared in 1998, nearly all subsequent albums and singles registered on the charts, among them the 2006 breakthrough Paso a Paso and the 2009 release Palabras del Silencio, both of which reached number one and remained there for several weeks. The January 2017 single “Despacito,” recorded with Daddy Yankee, quickly accumulated five billion video views. Vida, issued in 2019, entered the global Top Five. Throughout 2020 Fonsi issued further hit singles such as “Imposible” alongside Ozuna while serving as one of four coaches—alongside Wisin, Alejandra Guzmán, and Carlos Vives—on the inaugural Spanish-language season of La Voz broadcast by Telemundo. The following year he paired with Helene Fischer for the hit “Vamos a Marte.” In February 2022 he and Manuel Turizo unveiled the party anthem “Vacaciones,” which preceded his eleventh Top Ten Latin Pop Album, 2023’s Ley de Gravedad. The single “Santiago” opened 2024.
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Orlando, Florida, Fonsi entered entertainment early, performing in the school vocal ensemble the Big Guys that also featured future *NSYNC member Joey Fatone. After graduation he pursued vocal studies at Florida State University and secured a deal with Universal Latino. His Universal debut, Comenzaré, arrived in 1998 and performed solidly, reaching number 27 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart while generating four hit singles: “Si Tu Quisieras,” “Perdóname,” “Dime Como,” and “Me Iré.” The 2000 follow-up Eterno climbed even higher, peaking at number six on the same chart and yielding another four charting singles, one of which, “Imaginame Sin Ti,” topped the list. Additional releases sustained the pattern of strong sales over the ensuing years. Amor Secreto claimed the top spot on the Latin album chart in 2002, while Abrazar la Vida nearly repeated the feat in 2003, both propelled by multiple successful tracks. The sole misstep during this stretch was the English-language crossover project Fight the Feeling, which surfaced briefly in 2002.
Preparing his sixth studio album for a 2005 release, Fonsi took a deliberate step by enlisting producer Sebastian Krys, previously associated with Carlos Vives, Obie Bermúdez, and JD Natasha. The resulting record, Paso a Paso, retained its Latin-pop foundation yet placed guitars at the forefront instead of sweeping strings and incorporated varied rhythms and textures, yielding Fonsi’s most distinctive and inventive work to that point. Reviewers who had often been unsympathetic responded favorably, and audiences embraced the lead single “Nada Es Para Siempre,” driving brisk sales after the late-summer launch. Paso a Paso opened at number two on the Top Latin Albums chart and positioned Fonsi closer to inventive Latin acts such as Juanes than to the conventional ballad singers with whom he had previously been grouped.
Fonsi’s 2008 album Palabras del Silencio essentially extended the artistic direction established on Paso a Paso; he co-wrote every one of its thirteen tracks. The project attained double-platinum certification in the United States and Venezuela and gold status in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, and Central America. The 2011 follow-up Tierra Firme arrived next, buoyed by the hit single “Gritar.” Three years later he delivered his eighth album, titled simply 8, and supported it with an extensive tour.
Departing from his established style, Fonsi joined Puerto Rican rapper-singer Daddy Yankee for the reggaeton-inflected single “Despacito,” which ascended to number one upon its January 2017 release and held the summit for nearly six months. The track received Latin Grammy awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year; its remix featuring Justin Bieber earned Best Urban Fusion/Performance. At the Grammy Awards it earned nominations in the categories of Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the 2018 ceremony, while the original version was nominated for Song of the Year. A series of prominent singles followed in 2018, among them “Echame La Culpa” with Demi Lovato, “Calypso” with Stefflon Don, and “Imposible” with Ozuna. These cuts appeared on Fonsi’s tenth studio album, Vida, released in early 2019, which also included the original and Bieber-remixed versions of “Despacito” plus a Karol G variant of “Calypso.” Vida reached the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and topped the Latin charts. In May 2020 Fonsi contributed “Sway” to the NBC songwriting competition Songland, collaborated with Paul Oakenfold on “The World Can Wait,” and issued an accompanying remix EP. Two months later he released “Perfecta” featuring Farruko and closed the year with a live medley of “Despacito” and “Echame la Culpa” performed alongside Helene Fischer.
Fonsi began 2021 with the collaborative single “Por Isso Que Eu Bebo,” leading a vocal quartet that included Zé Neto & Cristiano and Thyy; the track registered on streaming charts. He next issued “Vacío” as a duet with urbano artist Rauw Alejandro, which landed inside the Latin Top 20 and remained on the chart for sixteen weeks. Subsequent releases included the tropical dance track “Bésame” with Myke Towers and the romantica dance single “Dos Veces” with David Bisbal. He reunited with Fischer for “Vamos a Marte,” which appeared on at least six international charts and reached number two in Germany, prompting an EP of club remixes. He also guested on Cali y El Dandee’s trap ballad “Yo No Te Olvido” and concluded the year with the solo release “Nuestra Balada.”
In January 2022 Fonsi appeared on Alok’s charting track “Un Ratito” alongside Lunay, Lenny Tavarez, and Juliette. He then joined Manuel Turizo on the spring-break party anthem “Vacaciones.” Early the following month Cali y El Dandee appeared on Fonsi’s streaming hit “Ley de Gravedad,” which served as the title track for his album of the same name. Issued that March, Ley de Gravedad incorporated many previously released singles, including “Vacio” and “Besame,” and became his eleventh project to reach the Top Ten on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart. The song “Santiago” surfaced in January 2024 as the first single from his forthcoming twelfth studio album.
