Recognized worldwide for his meticulously crafted recordings and commanding stage presence, Mexican performer Luis Miguel rose to international prominence with consistent chart success across Latin America. From 1990 onward he ranked among the region’s most enduring draws, earning the enduring nickname “El Sol de México.” In the United States he became the first Latino artist whose Spanish-language albums Romance and Segundo Romance each achieved platinum certification; the second of those releases accounted for one of his five Grammy wins and accumulated thirty-four platinum certifications across South and Central America. His stature received further confirmation in 2000 when he claimed both the Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Album honors at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards. Three years later the American Music Awards placed him among the nominees for Favorite Latin Artist. Standout entries in his catalog encompass the 1999 album Amarte Es un Placer, whose accompanying tour surpassed his prior benchmark as the highest-grossing outing by any Latin artist; the 2004 release México en la Piel, which moved three million copies globally; the 2008 project Cómplices, a long-planned partnership with Manuel Alejandro that reached number three on the Billboard 200; and the self-titled 2010 set issued to mark his fortieth birthday. That latter recording climbed to number forty-five on the Billboard 200 while simultaneously leading the Latin Albums and Latin Airplay charts. Also in 2010 the Latino Awards in New York City designated him “Artist of the Century.” His 2011–2012 road show earned placement among Billboard’s top three “Hot Tours” and finished fifth among the highest-grossing North American engagements of 2011. Across the first twenty-five years of the Hot Latin Songs chart he accumulated more entries than any other act. Following that trek Miguel maintained a low public profile for more than five years, limiting himself to occasional international concerts until the November 2017 arrival of ¡México por Siempre!, his twentieth studio album. Like the 2004 set México en la Piel, the new release focused exclusively on ranchera and mariachi repertoire.
