Among Venezuelan artists who have achieved widespread acclaim in Latin pop, Franco De Vita stands out as a singer-songwriter blending pop and rock elements. His breakthrough arrived in the late 1980s through global successes like the singles “Solo Importas Tu,” “Te Amo,” and “Louis.” In addition to performing, he works as a producer and plays multiple instruments. Sales of his recordings exceed 30 million units worldwide, while Latin pop figures ranging from Ricky Martin to Chayanne have recorded his material. Press materials note that one of his compositions is performed somewhere around the globe every five minutes.

De Vita entered the world on January 23, 1954, in Caracas, Venezuela, to parents of Italian descent. He launched his recording career as lead vocalist, keyboardist, and chief songwriter for the trio Icaro, whose other members were bassist José Flores and drummer Javier Exposito. The group issued just a single album, Icaro (1983), after which De Vita pursued a solo path. Under the Sonográfica imprint he issued his first solo long-player, Franco de Vita (1984), then followed it with Fantasía (1986). Although both efforts generated numerous hit singles, his audience remained largely domestic until the theme song “Solo Importas Tu” from the internationally broadcast telenovela La Dama de Rosa, which ran during 1986–1987. That track climbed into the upper reaches of the U.S. Latin singles chart, simultaneously boosting sales of the accompanying Fantasía album. Building on this momentum, De Vita secured a contract with Sony Music and delivered Al Norte del Sur, an album that earned both strong sales and favorable critical notices while yielding further international hits “Te Amo” and “Louis,” each of which also reached the U.S. Latin Top Ten.

The next release, Extranjero (1990), proved even more commercially potent, anchored by the chart-topping single “No Basta.” Later projects—Voces a Mi Alrededor (1993), Fuera de Éste Mundo (1996), and Nada Es Igual (1999)—sold steadily if less spectacularly, each contributing a consistent run of radio successes. Entering the new century, De Vita maintained a regular release schedule; among these later efforts, Stop (2004) stood out thanks to the singles “Tú De Qué Vas” and “Si La Ves,” the latter featuring Sin Bandera. A deluxe reissue titled Stop + Algo Más appeared the following year, adding bonus material, duet renditions with Olga Tañón, Brad Lee, and Reyli & Jeremías, plus a DVD. Capitalizing on Stop’s performance, the live set Mil y Una Historias en Vivo arrived in 2006, documenting both audio and concert footage. De Vita waited until 2008 to unveil the studio album Simplemente La Verdad, whose original songs earned him a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album, after which he toured extensively.

In 2011 Sony introduced its Primera Fila series of intimate acoustic recordings that paired leading artists with select guests for combined audio and video releases. De Vita’s contribution, En Primera Fila, topped charts in ten countries, achieved platinum status in Mexico, and earned Gold certification in the United States. Its singles “Tan Sólo Tú,” a duet with Alejandra Guzmán, and “Mira Más Allá” each reached number one, securing De Vita two further Latin Grammys in the categories of Best Male Pop Vocal Album and Best Long Form Music Video. He spent the subsequent eighteen months on tour. Later in 2012 he joined Tony Bennett for the track “The Good Life” on Viva Duets. At Sony’s request for a sequel, Vuelva en Primera Fila appeared in 2013. Larger in scale than its predecessor, the album assembled an international lineup of guests and led with the chart-topping duet “Te Pienso Sin Querer” alongside Gloria Trevi. It reached triple-platinum standing in Venezuela, peaked at number six on the U.S. Top Latin Albums chart, and received Gold certification in Mexico. The accompanying video component, Cronicas, was directed by award-winning filmmaker Juan Asuage, and the project supported an 18-country tour.

De Vita returned with the new studio composition “¿Dónde Está La Vida?” as a single on August 12, 2016, then issued the full-length Libre the following October. Featured guests included Spanish singer Rosario on “Desde el Principio” and Banda La Trakalosa De Monterrey on “Ya No Te Creo.”
