Born Roberto Sánchez on August 19, 1945, the Argentine pop balladeer Sandro discovered his musical drive early, when he began copying the stage moves and vocal style of rock’s leading figure, Elvis Presley. His initial group, Trio Azul, came together in 1960, yet the departure of Agustín Mónaco soon reduced the lineup to the brief-lived duo Los Caribes. The singer next joined Los Caniches de Oklahoma, an ensemble that later adopted the name Los del Fuego. His debut solo release, the 1963 single “¿A Esto Llamas Amor?,” appeared alongside the Los del Fuego track “Hay Mucha Agitación.” Recognition arrived in 1967 after Sandro took top honors at a Buenos Aires festival with the performance of his own composition “Quiero Llenarme de Ti.” Major stages followed, among them New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1970, and his stature was underscored the next year when 60,000 fans filled San Lorenzo’s stadium for one of his concerts. Acting opportunities also opened, leading to leading parts in sixteen films and the widely watched Puerto Rican telenovela Fue Sin Querer.
