Singer Alejandro "El Potrillo" Fernández ranks among Mexico’s foremost international music figures. As the offspring of legendary ranchera performer Vicente Fernández, he carved out his own identity as a ranchero vocalist throughout the 1990s. His debut album, Alejandro Fernandez, received a nomination for Regional Mexican Album of the Year at the 1993 Lo Nuestro Awards. After issuing four more albums over the next four years, he ventured into Latin pop for the first time with the number-one release Me Estoy Enamorando. Since then, nine of his albums have reached the summit of the Latin Pop charts and eleven others have appeared on the Billboard 200. The 2000 album Entre Tus Brazos earned a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the first Latin Grammy Awards. His 2004 chart-topper A Corazón Abierto blended classic Mexican romantic balladry with Latin pop production values. Dos Mundos, released in 2009, also led the charts and achieved multi-platinum status. In 2017 Rompiendo Fronteras merged ranchera elements with Latin pop and reggaeton arrangements, likewise securing multi-platinum certification. Fernández returned to folk traditions in 2020 with Hecho en Mexico, an album devoted exclusively to norteño and mariachi styles after two decades of pop experiments; it topped both the Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts while peaking at number 65 on the Billboard 200.

Fernández entered the world on April 24, 1971, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, as the son of ranchera icon Vicente Fernández, prompting the press to dub him “El Potrillo.” Beginning with his self-titled 1992 debut, he continued his father’s legacy by interpreting traditional music from the Jalisco region, particularly mariachi.

Although the initial stretch of his recording career—encompassing Alejandro Fernandez (1992), Piel de Niña (1993), Grandes Exitos a la Manera de Alejandro Fernandez (1994), Que Seas Muy Feliz (1995), and Muy Dentro de Mi Corazón (1996), all produced by Pedro Ramírez—generated a consistent stream of hit singles, his breakthrough arrived with the 1997 album Me Estoy Enamorando. Crafted by Emilio Estefan, Jr. and Kike Santander, the preeminent Latin pop production duo of the period, the project signaled Fernández’s move into mainstream pop. Me Estoy Enamorando itself ascended to the top of Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and yielded four Hot Latin Tracks number ones: “Si Tú Supieras,” “En el Jardín,” a duet with Gloria Estefan, “No Sé Olvidar,” and “Yo Nací Para Amarte.” To reaffirm his connection to his audience, Fernández rejoined longtime producer Pedro Ramírez in 1999 for the ranchera collection Mi Verdad before teaming once more with Estefan and Santander on the 2000 Latin pop success Entre Tus Brazos. In the years that followed he alternated between ranchera projects such as Orígenes (2001) and Niña, Amada Mía (2003) and contemporary Latin pop outings including A Corazón Abierto (2004) and Viento a Favor (2007). He also issued several live albums—Un Canto de México (2002), En Vivo: Juntos por Ultima Vez (2003), and México-Madrid: En Directo y Sin Escalas (2005)—and compiled the greatest-hits set 15 Años de Éxitos (2008).

After fulfilling his seven-album agreement with Sony, Fernández departed the label for Fonovisa. Sony attempted to issue a collection of previously unreleased material; Fernández filed suit, resulting in police seizure of 6,000 copies. In 2009 he unveiled the ambitious Fonovisa project Dos Mundos, comprising the simultaneous releases Evolución, oriented toward Latin pop, and Tradición, devoted to ranchera and mariachi. Both discs performed strongly, with Evolución edging ahead on the pop charts. A subsequent tour produced the live album Dos Mundos: Revolución (2010).

Fernández resumed recording in 2012 in Los Angeles alongside producer Phil Ramone. The resulting Confidencias, issued in July 2013, featured collaborations with Christina Aguilera on “Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti,” Rod Stewart on “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” and his father Vicente on “Me Olvidé de Vivir.” The album reached number one in Mexico and Spain and remained on the charts for more than a year. Continuing the collaborative approach, his next album incorporated contributions from Colombian band Morat and Peruvian singer-songwriter Gianmarco, along with four songs by Joss Favela and two by Mario Dom. Released in 2017, Rompiendo Fronteras adopted a multicultural perspective amid the prevailing political climate and presented rancheras and ballads framed by modern pop production and rhythms. It entered the Billboard 200, topped Latin Pop Albums, and led Top Latin Albums. In 2020 Fernández delivered Hecho en Mexico, his first collection consisting solely of mariachi songs. Lead single “Caballero” delivered his initial number one on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. “Menti” paired him with his father, while “Mas No Puedo” featured Christian Nodal. The album debuted at number one on both Latin Albums and Mexican Regional charts—his seventh to accomplish that feat—and made Fernández the first artist to secure Top Latin Albums chart-toppers across four consecutive decades: the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. It also reached number 65 on the Billboard 200.

Following nonstop touring throughout 2021 and most of 2022, Fernández released the mariachi single “Inexperto en Olvidarte” on January 6, 2023. The track marked the first occasion he recorded a song written by two women, the emerging Sinaloan songwriting partnership of Fernanda Díaz and Amanda Coronel.
