Paulina Rubio achieved an early measure of celebrity far sooner than the typical aspiring performer awaiting maturity. At the age of ten the daughter of Mexican film star Susana Dosamantes joined the children’s ensemble Timbiriche. Ten years afterward EMI issued her solo debut La Chica Dorada (1992), which yielded the breakthrough single “Mío.” Three further EMI releases followed—24 Kilates (1993), Tiempo Es Oro (1995), and Planeta Paulina (1996)—yet none matched the first album’s impact. Although she had already established herself as a familiar presence within Latin pop, it was the 2000 Universal album Paulina that finally drew widespread attention across the United States, reaching the summit of the Billboard Latin chart and securing Latin Grammy nominations. That momentum carried forward through the later projects Pau-Latina (2004) and Ananda (2006). Her sole misstep after departing EMI for Universal came with the English-language effort Border Girl (2002). The earlier EMI catalog, widely regarded as inferior to her subsequent Universal output, has since appeared repeatedly on inexpensive compilations such as Historia (2003) and Mio: Paulina y Sus Éxitos (2006).
