Lucho Bermudez, born Luis Eduardo Bermudez Acosta, became the first musician to adapt Colombia’s traditional rhythms for full orchestra, leaving an enduring mark on Latin American music as a whole. The ensemble he launched in 1946, Orquesta de Lucho Bermudez, still stands among the country’s most revered dance bands and maintains a regular schedule at Club San Fernando, the Granada Hotel in Bogota, and the Rustic Club in Medellin.

Signs of his musical gift appeared in early childhood. At seven, his uncle Jose Maria Montes provided basic instruction in music theory, and within three years Bermudez had gained command of the flute, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet. At fifteen he assumed the post of arranger and director with Banda Papayera, then assembled his debut group, Orchestra of the Caribbean, by the time he turned twenty-two. After completing recordings in Buenos Aires in 1946, he returned to Colombia and established Orquesta De Lucho Bermudez.
