Lynn White, a Memphis soul and blues diva, distinguished herself through a gentle, honeyed vocal approach in a style where harsher deliveries more often held sway. She came into the world on August 6, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, and took her first steps as a singer in church at age six. Her recording career began in earnest toward the end of the 1970s and yielded the debut album Am I Too Much Woman for You in 1981. One year afterward she cut “I Don’t Ever Want to See Your Face Again” for the modest Sho Me imprint; the track reached legendary producer Willie Mitchell, best known for his work with Al Green, who reissued it on his own Waylo Records and soon welcomed her into the studio. White remained with Waylo through the balance of the 1980s, then launched her Chelsea label at the start of the following decade and delivered The New Me in 1990. Home Girl appeared in 1991, with Cheatin’ arriving two years later.
