Biography
Enveloped in black cloaks and glowing masks that hide their real identities, the fantasy synthwave trio Magic Sword crafts retro-futuristic electronic music built on arpeggio-driven dance rhythms and soaring guitar and keyboard solos. Through recordings such as the 2020 album Endless, they recount the Keeper of the Magic Sword’s ongoing battle against the Dark One’s sinister dominion.
Formed in Boise during 2013, the project originally paired the Keeper of the Magic Sword on keyboards with the Seer of All Truths on guitar before the Weaver of All Hearts and Souls joined on drums. Their debut Volume 1 appeared as a self-released effort that year and sold through its initial pressing while the duo’s theatrical live shows stirred growing interest in the synthwave scene. Tender Loving Empire later reissued the album on vinyl with an accompanying comic book illustrated by Shay Plummer.
Two tracks from the record landed on the Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack, broadening the group’s reach and leading to tours with Carpenter Brut and Dance with the Dead. Additional milestones included a 2016 support slot for the Orb in Portland, Oregon, and a 2017 Treefort Music Fest appearance alongside members of the Boise Philharmonic.
The saga’s second volume emerged in three parts. Swedish label Size Records issued the opening Legend EP in 2016. Joyful Noise followed with the 2019 mini-album Awakening and then the concluding full-length Endless in 2020, each release again packaged with a comic book. Successive remixes of Endless tracks appeared individually throughout 2020 and 2021. In March 2022 the band collaborated with Metavari on “Dressed for Fantasy,” one of two songs on the EP The Weapon and the Soul, and in October released the dramatic new track “There Is Still Good in You.”
