Biography
Perturbator functions as the chief undertaking of French musician James Kent, establishing him as a central figure within the synthwave movement that rose to visibility across the 2010s. Several early releases propelled his ascent at the decade’s outset by fusing propulsive synth textures with shadowy, neon-infused visuals drawn equally from classic cyberpunk, horror, and sleaze aesthetics. Inclusion of multiple tracks in the Hotline Miami video games elevated his visibility, while the expansive 2016 concept album The Uncanny Valley placed prominently on Billboard’s Heatseekers Top Dance/Electronic Albums charts. With the subsequent full-length Lustful Sacraments in 2021, Kent redirected the project toward a more atmospheric and darkwave-oriented palette.
James Kent entered the world in Paris during 1993 as the offspring of established rock journalists Nick Kent and Laurence Romance. At three he received a Pantera album; at eleven a guitar followed. After mastering Tool and Slayer riffs on the instrument and beginning to compose original pieces, he also explored his parents’ synthesizer holdings, channeling both metallic and cyberpunk sensibilities through the keyboards. The 2012 EP Night Driving Avenger introduced his approach, while the albums Terror 404 and I Am the Night appeared the same year. This blend of retro-techno and intensity drew the attention of Hotline Miami’s creators, who incorporated Perturbator material into the 2012 game’s soundtrack. The Sexualizer EP arrived in 2013. Finnish extreme metal imprint Blood Music released the concept LP Dangerous Days in 2014 and subsequently reissued much of the earlier catalog. Contributions to the Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number soundtrack came in 2015, after which the narrative thread concerning a faith harnessing technology for persuasion extended to the 2016 concept album The Uncanny Valley. The electro-industrial-leaning EP New Model surfaced the following year.
Kent issued two volumes of B-Sides & Remixes in 2018 while continuing to shape fresh Perturbator material. That October he teamed with HEALTH for the track “Body/Prison.” In 2019 he featured in the John Carpenter-narrated synthwave documentary The Rise of the Synths. The more guitar-driven, goth rock-inflected full-length Lustful Sacraments appeared in 2021.
