Maharajapuram Santhanam

Maharajapuram Santhanam first saw the light of day in Srinagar, India, in 1928 and later lost his life in a road accident at Coopattur in Tamil Nadu on June 24, 1992. His earliest training in Carnatic music came from Melattur Shama Dixitar, after which he continued his studies with his father, the distinguished musician Maharajapuram Viswantha Iyer. In the same manner that he had emulated his father, Santhanam’s sons Ramachandran and Srinivasan now maintain the family’s musical lineage. His performances remain accessible on the Auvidis, AVM, Oriental, and T Series labels.
