Malombo

South Africa's longest-running ensemble originated in the early 1960s under the name Malombo Jazz Men. The group has sustained its mission of merging indigenous South African musical traditions with jazz improvisation. Its early configuration revolved around flutist Abe Cindi and percussionist Julian Bahula, yet the arrival of guitarist Dr. Philip Nchipi Tabane prompted a decisive shift. Under Tabane's direction, Malombo functioned as an incubator for accomplished musicians and vocalists, among them Mabe Thobejane, Raymond Motau, Oupa Monareng, Gabriel Thobehane, and Beki Mseleku.
