Biography
Born around 1958 in Tehran, Iran, Khadem immersed herself in radif, the classical repertoire native to her country, while performing with the Iranian National Radio And Television Children’s Choir. After relocating to the United States in 1976, she continued her training at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music and under the tutelage of Nevenka. In Los Angeles she became lead vocalist for Axiom Of Choice in 1992, contributing to both live appearances and the ensemble’s recordings, among them Beyond Denial in 1996, Niya Yesh in 2000, and Unfolding in 2002. With the group and on her own, she has appeared at venues throughout the United States and Europe. Beyond the concert stage and studio, her voice has been featured on the soundtracks of numerous films and television programs as well as in theatrical productions.
She pursued additional study in Iran with Parisa, Sima Bina, Saleh-Azeimi, and Hossein Alizadeh. Among the artists with whom she has performed and, at times, recorded are Reza Abaee, Simone Haggiag, Rubik Haroutunian, Eyvind Kang, Sofia Lambropoulou, Kourosh Moradi, Hamid Saeidi, Jamshied Sharifi, Skuli Sverrisson, Tulku, and Benjamin Wittman. Drawing from an array of traditions and, in particular, from classical Persian poetry that she pairs with ancient folk melodies, Khadem has assembled a body of love songs that reaches audiences around the world.
